Exotic Pets

At Westland Veterinary Hospital, our veterinarians are trained in exotic pet care!

Before choosing small mammals, birds, and reptiles as pets, it’s important to do as much research as possible. These animals have many different needs than cats and dogs, and it’s important to plan for those needs. Our small mammal and bird veterinarian can help you develop the best care plan for your exotic pet.

Dr. Valerie Pratt, our exotic vet, is prepared to service your exotic pets in the Westland, MI area. Dr. Pratt has experience in Exotic Animal Medicine and Raptor Medicine, with a special interest in small mammal and avian medicine.

We provide exotic pet care for:

  • Birds
  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets
  • Guinea pigs
  • Chinchillas
  • And other pocket pets!

Please note, we do not see reptiles, amphibians, fish, arachnids, primates or any venomous/ poisonous pet. If you are uncertain if we are able to provide care to your exotic pet, please contact our clinic.

Veterinary Exams for Your Exotic Pets

Regardless of an exotic animal’s species, we recommend annual wellness exams for every patient. Exotic pet care exams include a complete health check and conversation regarding husbandry, nutrition, handling, habitat, and other factors that determine their quality of life. If you notice any sign of disease or illness in your pet, please bring it to our attention immediately. What appears to be a minor infection, or a small cold can escalate very quickly.

Additional exotic pet services we offer include:

  • Spaying/neutering for rabbits and ferrets
  • Adrenal gland removal
  • Beak, nail, and wing trims
  • Blood testing and X-rays
